“We have noticed inconsistent product quality mainly from Californian producers”
The continued growth of the North American ACE industry is being driven by the fact that more and more food service providers are switching to indoor grown foods. Today, Midwestern hydroponic grower Pure Green Farms announced it will be supplying greens to one of them. The reason for this is the uneven quality of produce from outdoor growers.
Cincinnati-based family-owned pizzeria LaRosa will have Pure Green Farms pure leaf lettuce on its menu starting today. Pure Green Farms will supply over 10,000 pounds. baby leaf per week at 66 pizzerias in LaRosa serving Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana.
“While we’re best known for pizza, we also serve tens of thousands of salads a year,” said Mark LaRosa, Buddy’s son and President and Chief Executive Officer of LaRosa’s. “We’ve been using iceberg lettuce in our salads for years. But recently we have experienced uneven product quality mainly from California growers due to the weather conditions there as well as the difficulty in getting on time delivery, ”he said. “Pure Green Farms Leaf Lettuce solves both problems. It’s fresh and tastes great. It has the same robust crunch that our guests loved in our iceberg lettuce, ”said LaRosa.
Pure Green Farms Leaf Lettuce will be featured in all LaRosa side and starter style salads. Lettuce is grown on one of the most high-tech and sustainable indoor farms in the country. The farm, located in South Bend, Indiana, uses cutting-edge technology to sow, grow, harvest and pack vegetables hands-free.
“Now is a good time to get into the restaurant business,” says Joe McGuire, CEO of Pure Green Farms. “Just as LaRosa’s has served local customers for almost 70 years, we pride ourselves on serving our local community with sustainable, healthy and fresh greens. This is what our brand stands for: The Pure Green Farms greenhouse is equipped with many technologies, which makes growing fresh lettuce all year round a cleaner and safer business. Our farm uses much less water and never uses pesticides or herbicides. Pure Green Farms cultivates clean, environmentally responsible crops all the time. ”
