Football fever sweeps through Barrow’s Hollingarth nursery as children show support for England
FOOTBALL fever has indeed swept the country in recent weeks – and kindergarten children are showing their own special support for the England squad.
The European Championship is the talk of the city across the UK, providing people with a much-needed distraction from the continued restrictions of Covid-19.
At Hollingarth Day Nursery in Barrow, the Robin classroom staff had fun celebrating England’s latest win and are looking forward to their next match.
Paige McDermott, of Barrow, is the Robin Class teacher at Hollingarth Day Nursery.
The 21-year-old said the kids love spending time outdoors and immersing themselves in team sport.
She said: “The kids and parents loved getting involved in our soccer themed days and it was a fantastic way to incorporate exercise and healthy living into our summer session schedule.
“The kids loved spending time outdoors in good weather and really enjoyed the camaraderie of playing sports in a team environment.
“To promote British values in nurseries we always encourage taking turns and therefore everyone has set goals.
“It has been really wonderful for me as a teacher as well, because football is one of my passions.
“I have been playing for Morecambe Ladies FC since I was a teenager and can’t wait to start over after the Covid-19 restrictions are completely lifted.”
Miss McDermott organized the football days with her wonderful 17-year-old early childhood apprentice, Lucy Tomkins.
Miss McDermott said: “Lucy taught the kids to dribble the ball and do drills, the kids absolutely love her.”
England are currently two games away from winning the European Championship after beating Ukraine by four goals on Saturday.
The team are set to face Denmark in the semi-finals today at 8 p.m. ET.
