Arium Leeds manager and Leeds Garden Crew give their best tips for summer gardening
Here we have compiled some tips and advice for all gardeners.
So even if you’ve never bought a garden trowel before or on the other hand, you already have and use your own greenhouse, here are some helpful tips below.
We spoke to Balazs Molnar of the Leeds Garden Crew for his advice for novice gardeners.
Get the right kit! – “A good variety of hand tools is a must to get started, it’s just a few books in any DIY store.
“For beginners, I always recommend battery-powered or electric hedge trimmers, lawn mowers and string trimmers, as gasoline-powered tools require more maintenance.”
Start simply: “My favorite beginner plant is a strawberry, it is easy to grow with little space required.
“Other simple entrees include potatoes, corn and sunflowers.
“You can buy all the seeds for these in most nurseries or garage sales”
Expand your knowledge: “Read books on the subject, watch gardening programs on TV and be brave and explore, gardening is a never-ending learning experience”
Garden in your community: “Joining a local allotment group is a good idea, there are nice people there and it’s a great place to share ideas and knowledge.
“In addition, on social networks, there are large groups where we are always changing advice and people are ready to share their knowledge”
Andrew Culloden, Arium Nursery Manager in Leeds, gave us a list of five gardening tasks you should accomplish this month.
Weeding: “Treat the weeds as soon as they emerge, that leaves less work for the rest of the summer. Try to remove all the weeds with their roots so that they do not come back, the sooner the better ”.
Summer bedding plants: “Get them planted now, it’s the perfect time to add a touch of color to your garden”
Tall plants: “You should look for plants that are tall in June, stake them and tie them up to provide support for the plant as they grow and start to flower”
Food and water: “Check all containers daily to make sure all your plants are getting the right amount of water and food, in the sun is very important”
Cut: “All the plants which have flowered this year must be pruned lightly, this means that they will be in perfect condition for the next year when they bloom again”.
